It’s December 19th and the horses are uncomfortably warm in even the thinnest rug! However, it’s so wet that the fields are treturously deep with mud, so the horses, and everything else, including me, are perminant lay plastered in it. The wind is almost perminant lay howling too. The unnaturally warm weather means that there still plenty of of flying, biting insects around too

On the up side, Florence is now fully integrated into the herd. It’s gone much better than expected. So far she is fully accepting of her position at the bottom of the pecking order. , with only a few minor altercations when Sapphire thinks the line has been crossed. For example, this morning Floreence and Magnum were caught red hoofed mutual grooming – flash point!

Sadly, because of the monsoon, I haven’t done anywhere near as much with Florence as I’d hoped, and likewise Hal with Leonie. In fact all we seem to do at the moment is muck out, and poor Hal ends up doing the lion’s share of that. However, Florence now has front shoes on, her flu and tetanus jabs have been started, and we’re getting on top of the mite infestation , she’s much more comfortable and less itchy now.

What we would all really like is some proper seasonal weather though. I don’t mean snow, but some cold, crisp frosty mornings would go down a treat right now. I wouldn’t even mind having to break ice off the water troughs. I’d love tree tops to glisten, Jack Frost to nip at my nose, and Earth to stand hard as iron, water like a stone.

Still, heartened by the fact that the Solstace is only a few days away, all of upoo picking in the dark would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy and peaceful New Year.
